The 55-250mm AF-S has an A/M focus switch, which has to be set to A. If you've done this, and the lens still isn't working, Nikon can answer your questions better than we can. If your lens is AF, rather than AF-S, it has no built-in motor, and therefore Can't autofocus on a D40, D80, or any of the D3xxx and D5xxx series. Although there are several variations of Nikon 18-55mm kit lenses, most if not all of them have an AF/MF switch on the lens as well. Have you checked the switch on the lens to see if it has been moved? If the camera menu has AF turned off but the lens switch is set to AF you may not be able to move the focus ring on the lens. If you can't get a focus confirmation when focusing manually and or don't get aperture confirmation when setting aperture then the chip in the lens may have failed.
